Of the many wedding details that the bride-to-be has to give attention to before her big day, the flower girl basket is only one.  For many, choosing a flower girl basket may be the easiest decision they’ll make.  For others, making a good selection can seem daunting because of the wide variety of designs available.  For these, taking into consideration the future bride’s color scheme, as well as the flower girl’s age and size will make it less of a challenge to pick a perfect basket. 

A flower girl’s basket should match the bride’s dress, other accessories or color scheme.  For instance, if the wedding dress is white, to have the other ceremony items, such as the ring bearer pillow and flower girl basket in white is the traditional choice.  Or, the bride may want to match these items with the colors of her bridesmaids’ dresses.  For example, if the ladies’ dresses are brown and pink, then the ring pillow and flower girl basket can be covered in brown fabric with pink ribbons or vice-versa.  This is an excellent way to bring extra color to the occasion.

What about the basket’s size?  Here is where the flower girl’s age and size should be considered.  How tall is she?  A flower girl basket chosen for a 2 year old most likely will be too small for a 10 year old.  Baskets with shorter handles will be appropriate for 2-5 year olds, whereas the older and taller girls’ look will be balanced by flower girl baskets with longer handles. 

How far of a distance will the flower girl have to walk scattering petals?  The answer to this question will determine the depth of the basket she’ll need.  For a relatively short distance, a basket of average depth, 3”-4” will suffice.  But for greater distances, a deeper flower girl basket of 6” or more will be needed to hold enough petals for the long aisle.

The style of the flower girl basket should match with the flower girl’s age.  Younger girls in the age range of 2-6 years may be quite happy with the ruffles, curly bows and frilly lace of some flower girl basket styles.  But older girls will, no doubt, feel more comfortable with the less fussy, plainer styles that don’t scream “Little Girl!”

Deciding on the right flower girl basket will be a hassle-free experience if the flower girl’s age and size, the bride-to-be’s color scheme and the pathway the flower girl has to walk are kept in mind.  The result will be the selection of a flower girl basket that will perfectly complement the wedding day’s "young princess"—the flower girl.

The flower girl basket has consistently been featured in modern weddings.  It has taken various forms, many have come a long way from the woven, straw basket that flower girls carried down the wedding aisle in decades past.  This is not to say that those flower girl baskets were anything less than very attractive.  In fact, its loveliness is what has kept brides-to-be insisting that the traditional flower girl basket be a part of their wedding ceremonies down through the years.  Nowadays, however, alternatives to the “standard” decorated woven or fabric-covered basket have appeared on the market, two of which are the flower girl cone and the flower girl satchel.

The Cone.  The flower girl cone gets its name from its shape.  If you haven’t seen one, try picturing an inverted triangle with a handle made of ribbon or fabric attached at each of the upper ends.  Although that is the basic outline, like the flower girl basket, the cone comes in a variety of forms.   Some are made completely of fabric, with no stiffening, and so will lay flat when not filled with flower petals.  Others are stiff only around the upper rim.  This design keeps the mouth of the cone open giving “roundness” to the rest of the otherwise limp cone.  Sturdier flower girl cones are made using a plastic form which is then covered with fabric, ensuring that the entire cone keeps its shape.  

 The flower girl cone can be very ornate, for example, with the couple’s monogram embroidered onto it, and further embellished with rhinestones or beads. Or it can be quite simple, with no decorations besides a silk flower attached, or perhaps, one or two bows out of sheer or satin ribbon.  At times, only the fabric itself is what makes the flower girl cone interesting and wonderful.  With this accessory, there is tremendous room for the prospective bride to express her personal style.

The Satchel.   Sometimes it can be a challenge for older flower girls to get used to the idea of carrying a flower girl basket without feeling that it will make them look too childish.  The answer may be a second basket alternative—the flower girl satchel.  The satchel is basically a simple bag usually made of fabric with a ribbon or cord handle.  There’s no particular rule on size, but the majority are relatively small, having, more or less, the dimensions of a ring bearer pillow.  Since the satchel can closely resemble a purse, flower girls are more likely to feel less uncomfortable with one in hand when carrying out their wedding day role.

Some online bridal shops offer flower girl satchels in a limited choice of colors, mainly white or ivory.  Since the bride’s dress is usually one of those colors, a white or ivory flower girl satchel will suffice if one can’t be obtained in her wedding colors.  But, when ivory or white just won’t work, what can be done?  That’s the time to seek out one of the growing number of internet bridal shops that specialize in customizing wedding accessories.   So whether a flower girl satchel in turquoise and hot pink is desired, or one in navy and silver, it can be custom-made to the bride’s color specifications.

Most weddings that include a flower girl in the bridal party will also feature a traditional flower girl basket, in one form or another.  For those brides who are determined to be a little unique, or who are trying to make an older flower girl happy, then, either the flower girl cone or the flower girl satchel will be a great alternative to consider.
